TOPEKA, Kan. (WIBW/Gray News) - Ron Hubbard never expected fiction to become reality.

“I was thinking about a scenario I seen on TV where a delivery guy did the same when the police was chasing a guy who stole a car,” Hubbard said.

Hubbard said he was hanging with a friend Wednesday, Oct. 28, when they noticed something unusual.

“I happened to look up the street to my left, and I seen this strange guy,” Hubbard said.

The man, now identified as Adam Schwegman, also caught another bystander’s attention.

“We confronted him because the other guy had been up at the park, where this all took place,” Hubbard said.

Topeka police say an hour earlier, Schwegman stabbed two people along S.W. Fillmore. His booking charges also include an allegation of rape at that address.

TPD says Schwegman then moved up the same road, breaking into two homes -- four children were inside one of them, including a four-month-old. Officials say they were not hurt.

However, it didn’t stop there.

Police say a third victim was stabbed on a nearby street.

And finally, a 70-year-old woman was hurt when Schwegman attacked her at Ward Meade Park. Schwegman was running from there when Hubbard spotted him.

“I decided to step in, throw my leg out, trip him and he landed over here in the grass, and the knife fell in the grass,” Hubbard said.

Hubbard said he kicked the knife to the sidewalk, as the second person held Schwegman. He got away, but police soon caught him.

Schwegman was booked in connection with 16 charges, including aggravated battery and rape.

Hubbard says he was glad to step in to prevent further harm.

“Well, if you see something bad, try to help stop it. I wish we could have got to it before this happened,” Hubbard said.

Schwegman made his first appearance in court on Thursday, Oct. 29. The judge has set a total bond of $3 million.
