How much did a 1982 World Series ticket cost? One fan still has his
MOSINEE, Wis. (WSAW) - A Mosinee man who went to Game 5 of the 1982 World Series at County Stadium still has his ticket from the game. Dan Wilhelms said he will be watching Tuesday night to see if a championship will be brought back to Milwaukee.
“It seems like a hundred years ago,” Wilhelms said.
A Wisconsin sports fan
Wilhelms is a sports fan, traveling across the country to different college and professional sports venues. He is a Wisconsin sports fan above all else, with a special fandom for the Brewers, Packers and Badgers.
“I’ve got a whole other set of those teams that I followed over the years, or went to their stadiums and went to the games,” Wilhelms said.
The Braves left Milwaukee when he was a teenager, and the Brewers arrived as he was about to graduate from high school. Wilhelms said it took him a while to become a big Brewers fan, and that it happened after he moved to Chicago.
“It took me a while to really become a big Brewers fan and actually it was moving to Chicago because they were close by,” Wilhelms said.
The trip to County Stadium
Chicago is closer to Milwaukee than his hometown of Rib Lake. When the chance came to see the World Series at County Stadium, Wilhelms said yes.
He drove to County Stadium from Chicago and paid $18 for a ticket. Wilhelms said he will never forget the atmosphere, the fans and the tailgating.
“It was just so loud. I remember in the stadium, my friend I went to the game with, I couldn’t even hear him sitting next to me. And we stood through most of the game,” Wilhelms said.
Ticket stub and seat cushion
Wilhelms still has his ticket stub from Game 5 in his home. He also has the seat cushion given to fans at the game in the 1980s.
“We got there really early and the first few fans — few thousand — got the seat cushions with it and you can see I hardly ever used it,” Wilhelms said.
The ticket and cushion are part of a larger sports memorabilia collection. Wilhelms also has tickets from Badgers, Brewers and Packers games. A photo of him in a Cubs photo hangs on the wall.
Watching Tuesday night
Wilhelms said he is hoping things end differently this time. He still gets excited about games, though he does not get to many now.
“This is exciting. This is really cool. I don’t get to too many games now living up here and now being a senior, but I still get excited about the games,” Wilhelms said.
“Really excited about tonight and whatever happens, you know, so it should be fun,” Wilhelms said.
