The family of a Wisconsin Rapids veteran is reaching out to the public to make one last wish come true.

Robert Almquist served 30 years in the United States Navy and is hoping to see the memorial for this ship that he served on, which is in California.

"The big wish has always been to go out and see his ships mast in Oakland, California. He has a plaque in his honor down in San Diego and he'd like to go to Treasure Island and see the places where he first went in the Navy," Robert’s son Simon said.

"There's the mast, and there's a couple of other places. I've never seen it there," Robert added.

Roberts’s time in the pacific during WWII was so inspiring to his family, some of them even followed in his footsteps.

"Simon was in the Navy, Lynn was in the Navy and Pat was in the Navy and I have a granddaughter that's a captain in the Army today. So I’m pretty proud of my family," Robert mentioned.

After spending 30 years in the Navy, Robert Almquist sees this trip as his last send off.

"That's why I wanted to take my daughter along and Simon there. So they can see what we went through," Robert said.

The family has reached out to the community through GoFundMe to help with the expenses, so that Robert can share these memories with his family members.

"He's been a big Navy man all his life, he's but in 30 years altogether and he just dedicated a whole room for it, it'll just be the icing on the cake for him," Simon added.
