Publix expands its frozen berries recall. Here’s why

(CNN) - Publix has expanded its recall of frozen berries because they may be contaminated with E. coli.

Publix announced this week it is now recalling all lots of Greenwise organic whole blueberries and Greenwise whole mixed berries.

They were shipped to stores in eight states: Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee and Virginia.

Both were sold in 10- and 48-ounce bags.

Publix previously recalled a single lot of the Greenwise organic whole blueberries due to the possible E. coli contamination.

At least 12 people have fallen ill.

Publix said it expanded the recall out of an abundance of caution.

Customers should not eat the frozen berries and return them to the store for a full refund.
