WisDOT will complete reroute of BUS 51/WIS 52 through Wausau this spring
A project nearly six years in the making will be finalized this spring. The Wisconsin Department of Transportation will complete the reroute of BUS 51 and WIS 52 through the city of Wausau.
The plans were shared in 2019.
The rerouting moves WIS 52 onto Bridge Street from US 51 to N 6th Street, and BUS 51 from Grand Avenue to Thomas Street and 1st and 3rd Avenues. The signing in the city was relocated in 2024.
The rerouting of the highways is the result of a study conducted by WisDOT per the request of the city of Wausau related to ongoing efforts to re-vitalize their downtown central business district.
Under the proposal, STH 52 would be rerouted at McIndoe Street to follow 5th Street to Scott Street. BUS 51 will then be rerouted at Scott Street to follow Scott Street to 1st Street. The project improves the operational efficiency of northbound BUS 51 and westbound STH 52, and shortens the overall length of BUS 51.
