100-plus vehicles involved in massive pileup on Oregon interstate in near whiteout conditions

COLUMBIA RIVER GORGE, Ore. (KPTV/Gray News) - A pileup involving more than 100 vehicles closed a portion of Interstate 84 near Multnomah Falls on Thursday.

According to the Multnomah County Sheriff’s Office, the massive pileup involved cars, trucks and semitrucks.

Deputies said an SUV also caught fire in the crashes, but everyone inside the vehicle was able to escape.

Near whiteout conditions have been reported on I-84 as winter weather moved through the area Thursday.

People were reportedly stuck inside their vehicles as authorities worked to clear the interstate.

Officials urged those caught in the pileup to stay inside their vehicles until it was safe to travel again.

Multiple agencies responded to the scene.
