Every year, pets owners need to get new licenses for their cats and dogs in Wausau.

"In the city of Wausau, all dog and cat licenses expire on the 31st of December every year," City Clerk Tony Rayala said.

It's state law for all dogs to be licensed, but not cats. In Wausau, you need to have a license for both.

I think that people feel like they are being taxed for having their pet," said Lincoln County Humane Society Shelter Manager Liz Friedenfels.

Pet licencing and the money it pulls in for the community applies to shelters statewide.

Liz Freidenfels says that money from the licenses is important to keep animal shelters operating.

"A majority of that money does go to the shelter in your area," Friedenfels said.

In Lincoln County, if your dog runs away and ends up at the shelter without a license, you have to purchase one to get your animal back. If you're adopting, the animal is licensed before you leave.

"You know it is a way to support the shelter, and in that way you're also remaining compliant with the state law." Friedenfels said.

Now everyone in Wausau will be paying the same fee. The only way to get a discount is if you get a new puppy or kitten after the month of July.

In Wausau, it is $60 for a cat or dog license if they are not spayed or neutered, and $18 if they are fixed.
