Whitewater PD: Charges filed against man after 21-year-old student killed

WHITEWATER, Wis. (WMTV) - A 23-year-old man was arrested and is facing multiple charges after a 21-year-old woman was shot and killed, according to the Whitewater Police Department.

In a release sent to UW-Whitewater students Saturday, the university identified that the woman killed was a UW-Whitewater student. In a later update, police identified the student as Kara Welsh of Plainfield, Illinois.

Whitewater Police said the suspect is facing charges of first-degree intentional homicide, endangering safety by use of a dangerous weapon and disordering conduct while armed.

Whitewater Police were called to an apartment in the 100 block of West Whitewater Street just before midnight on Friday for a report of a person who was shot.

There, police found the woman who had been shot multiple times.

The man, who was known to the woman, was at the apartment, and police say investigations showed an altercation happened between the two before the shooting.

The man was taken into custody.

The investigation into the apparent homicide is ongoing with police saying more information will be released when it it becomes available.

The Whitewater Police Department says they offer sincere condolences to the family of the woman killed.

Other agencies involved in the investigation include the Wisconsin State Crime Lab, the Walworth County Sheriff’s Office, and the UW-Whitewater Police Department.
