STEVENS POINT, Wis. (WSAW) - A 20-year-old man convicted for his role in the deadly beating of an elderly man will spend 20 years in prison, followed by five years of extended supervision.
Arlin Sangster, of Rothschild, was sentenced Tuesday morning in Portage County Circuit Court. He was found guilty at trial of first-degree reckless homicide and theft. Sangster and two other men-- Brandon Boehm, 20, and Christian Emerson, 18 were separately charged for the death of 61-year-old Donald Mitchell Jr.
He’ll receive credit for 258 days already spent in custody.
The three Wausau area men are accused of fatally assaulting a man in the parking lot of Cobblestone Hotel and Suites in Stevens Point. Police said the victim Mitchell Jr was found on March 15. He died the following day due to his injuries.
According to the criminal complaint, doctors said nearly every bone in his face had been fractured and that he had suffered multiple fractured ribs. The man lost consciousness and was placed on life support, he died the next day.
The defendants said that Mitchell Jr. armed himself with a pair of pliers. Police said those pliers were located next to Mitchell Jr.’s body in the parking lot.
Portage County District Attorney Cass Cousins previously said a video posted to TikTok was used as part of the evidence in the case. He told NewsChannel 7 the video was found in Emerson’s camera roll. It had been saved from TikTok. It’s not exactly clear yet who took the video. Court documents stated the video was taken from the perspective of someone sitting in the passenger seat of a car.
According to the criminal complaint, two witnesses said the victim believed the men took something from his truck. The victim was living in his truck and had been staying in the parking lot.
Cousins explained that Boehm’s actions were the reason for the confrontation. Court documents state Boehm was looking for items in vehicles in the parking lot.
A clerical court appearance for Boehm is scheduled for Dec. 16. Emerson’s trial is scheduled to begin on Jan. 27.
