Scammers Target Craigslist with Fake Rental Property Posting

A Wisconsin couple is warning fellow renters to be aware a scam that’s hit Craigslist.

The couple says after replying to a listing for a house for rent in the Eau Claire area, they became suspicious.

The listing did not specify an address, and when contacted the person by email, they replied saying they were moving out of the country and would mail the home’s keys once they received money.

During an interview with WEAU-TV, the potential victim, James Davis says he and his wife knew right away something wasn’t right. The couple says that same day they replied to another listing and received the same sketchy response.

One of the homes listed was a real property however; the homeowner had no intention of renting it and say scammers have used her real name to create the listing.

As of Wednesday evening, the listings were no longer on Craigslist.

One of the homeowners tells WEAU she plans on contacting the F.B.I.
