MILWAUKEE-- The American Legion of Wisconsin is announcing a drive to expand a veterans rehabilitation camp in northern Wisconsin.
The organization has operated Camp American Legion on state-owned land in Oneida County since 1925. The camp provides free services to Wisconsin veterans, as well as military members and their families, who have a physical or psychological injury, illness or disability.
The Department of Natural Resources owns the land where the camp is located in Lake Tomahawk. The American Legion owns the buildings and facilities but leases the land.
Since 1964, the DNR has leased about 75 acres to the Legion. The group wants to expand the camp to its historic boundaries, bringing the property to 300 acres.
That would include a handicapped accessible trail for hunting, for the Legion's exclusive use.
