SPARTA, Wis. (AP) -- A former Monroe County sheriff's lieutenant who admitted having sexual contact with a mentally ill female inmate faces prison time after pleading guilty to misconduct in office.

David Schaldach originally was charged with abuse of an inmate.

The criminal complaint says he was a jail supervisor when he allegedly had sexual contact with the female prisoner at least twice in 2002. According to the complaint, the inmate suffered from a variety of mental health conditions.

The 61-year-old Schaldach, who retired in 2002, was sentenced to 18 months in prison followed by a year on extended supervision.

The victim also is seeking at least $2 million in damages in a federal lawsuit she filed earlier this month against Schaldach and the former sheriff and undersheriff of Monroe County.

An earlier lawsuit against the jail was settled for $13 million.
