Stevens Point, Wis. (WSAW) -- While most athletes had already put pen to paper during the early signing period last November, two area athletes took the next step in their athletic and academic careers.
SPASH seniors Gabby Johnson and Abby Gemza signed their National Letters of Intent in a ceremony held Wednesday.
Gemza will be heading down south to Clarksville, Tennessee to play soccer for division 1 Austin Peay State University.
"I went to a showcase in Vegas with one of my club teams I was guest playing for, and they saw me play and they liked how I played and they emailed me and said 'hey we really like you and we're looking for a center back," Gemza said. "So I went and checked it out and I loved the school. Like the whole atmosphere and what their idea of what a team should really look like and I just loved that and I knew this was the school for me."
Johnson will be staying in the frozen north, competing in both volleyball and track and field for division 2 St. Cloud State University in Minnesota.
"I just, this is always what I've wanted to do. I didn't want to give up a sport and I loved them both so much and when anyone asks me what my favorite sport is, I can't give them an answer because I love them equally. So it's really awesome to have the opportunity to compete in both in college," Johnson said.
