WAUSAU, WIs. (WSAW)-- "Every time I would be working out this year I would be thinking about that workout that we had and how we lost it," Newman basketball captain Julia Seidel said.
After losing in the state semifinal last year, the Newman Cardinals girls basketball team is looking to turn a corner in the 2019 season.
"Having the group of six seniors it shows are playing for something bigger than ourselves. You know we have that group the upperclassmen that we are trying to get back to state and have that journey with again," Captain Lauren Shield added.
Even though the season has just started, the team has already grown close.
"All the girls in the gym right now I can say that we're really good friends with and we're all on the same page and I think that's really important," Shields mentioned.
The Cardinals play under the motto "one way".
"It just means playing for each other playing for our teammates, playing for God. Just being selfless people on the basketball court," Seidel said.
"It's just for playing for something bigger than yourself," Shields added.
The team could be deadly with their talent alone. But there are a few intangibles that will make the biggest difference this season.
"We've played basketball for a long time and I think that our skills will take us far but what will take us farther is the confidence we put in each other," Shields mentioned.
"Working really hard to make yourself better to make each other better and working harder as a team because you'll get farther that way," Seidel said.
