Marathon working toward state

MARATHON CITY, Wis (WSAW) -- The Marathon softball team was one step away from state last year losing to Phillips by one run in the sectional final. This year, their goal is to overcome that level and make it to Madison. They've had some challenges this season, especially with the "wintery" weather. While the Red Raiders have a 5-1 conference record, other teams in the Marawood-South have played as many as five more conference games than them, but now with Spring weather and a team of driven girls, the road to the playoffs is in high gear.

"Getting to the sectional final just made us want it even more. This year we're taking a new approach to it, we lost some great players," said Marathon senior Kenya Kaldunksi. "Sasha (Hornung), Jenna and I are really stepping up and try to be the leaders that they were."

"Each of us wrote our goals on a piece of paper and I'm like 'state' in all all caps," said Marathon senior Sasha Hornung. "I just believe in each other and being closer as a team, that would help us a lot."

"Our goal is always to try to make it to state, that is always our goal," said Marathon head coach Chad Thurs. "Conference comes first of course, we're on a mission there. We have a bunch of games, we got four games yet this week to play for conference. That's on target. we're starting to get our mind set for the tournament and the playoffs."
