WAUSAU, Wis. (WSAW)-- The 36-year-old man police said robbed a Wausau gas station over the weekend was charged Wednesday with attempted armed robbery, intimidating a victim and retail theft.
Stephen Cento will be released from custody on a $10,000 signature bond if he is able to post the first $1,000 in cash.
According to a news release, the suspect entered Kwik Trip, requested a cigar at the checkout, and then demanded money. A weapon was not displayed, however, Wausau Police say the suspect stood with his hand behind his back as if possessing a weapon.
According to court documents, Cento said he knew the cashier and was joking he said he wanted 'everything in the register'. He told police he ran when she became fearful and told a coworker to call 911.
Investigators said the suspect grabbed the cigar without paying for it and fled the scene before officers arrived.
No money was taken during the incident.
Wausau Police were quickly able to distribute photos of the suspect and the suspect's vehicle on social media. The vehicle had a missing hubcap and what looked like missing paint, but turned out to be snow.
Cento was arrested Tuesday at another gas station. An officer was there investigating a separate call when they recognized Cento's vehicle and requested other officers arrive.
A clerical court appearance is scheduled for April 28.
