Shopko closures could impact the cities they're in

NEENAH, Wis. (WLUK) -- With Shopko closing another 139 stores nationwide, the loss of jobs is just one of several concerns. Some mayors are also concerned about the impact of having big empty buildings in their cities.

Neenah's mayor Dean Kaufert says the closure could hurt neighboring businesses. But the one closing there is in a good location, along Highway 41.

"There's a whole host of ideas of people we'd like to send out feelers to and tell them we have this space available and that's what we're going to do."

In Kimberly, the location is not as ideal, but the village administrator says it could become riverfront development.

Rhinelander, Stevens Point, and Plover Shopkos are among those closing this spring.
