WAUKESHA, Wis. (WSAW) -- A 17-year-old student is in custody after officials say he brought a gun to Waukesha South High School on Monday morning.

According to Waukesha police, around 10:17 a.m., a student reported another student brought a handgun to school and had it in a classroom. A school resource officer immediately responded to the room and got the other students in the classroom to safety.

WDJT-TV reports officers attempted to de-escalate the situation but said the suspect refused to take his hand out of his pocket and continued to ignore officers' commands.

Waukesha police said the suspect removed a gun from his waistband and pointed it at the officer. An officer, an 11-year-old veteran of the police department, was forced to discharge his weapon and the suspect was shot.

Authorities provided immediate medical attention to the suspect and he was taken to a hospital in stable condition.

No other officers or students were injured in the incident.
