WAUSAU, Wis. (WSAW) -- A 25-year-old former Mauston High School social studies teacher charged with having a sexual relationship with student has pleaded guilty to exposing a child to harmful material.

Stewart Thompson is no longer employed by the district after resigning last month.

In exchange for the plea, the charge of child enticement and sexual assault of a student by school staff member were dismissed, but will be considered during his sentencing.

According to court documents Thompson was arrested Jan. 26-- the day after turning in his resignation. Investigators said they followed Thompson and the student to a Middleton restaurant for a date, according to the criminal complaint.

Officers initiated a traffic stop as Thompson drove back into Juneau County.

The alleged victim stated the two met during the capacity of Thompson's employment. Their relationship began by texting and using Snapchat, but later turned sexual in nature.

Thompson is free on $50,000 cash bond.

A sentencing date has not yet been set.
