WAUSAU, Wis. (WSAW) -- Fat biking is one of the most popular hobbies to get out and do in the wintertime, and here in our area, it's continuing to grow.
"There's not a lot of difference between fat bikes and regular bikes, except tire size and where one can ride," explained John Nowaczyk with Trek. "They have bigger, wider tires, so they offer more float and traction, and are less likely to sink into snow, and yes, fat bikes are a four season bike and can be super fun on summer trails as well as winter ones."
Nowaczyk said that you can keep riding during the off season to maintain your fitness, and it offers something fun and different to do in the cold winter vs the traditional skiing or snowshoeing.
"Upcoming events that involve fat biking are the Badger State Games, several winter races, and even Winter Fest," Nowaczyk said.
Frequent cleaning of the bike is recommended and dressing in layers as well as checking tire pressure are important points to remember when riding.
"The fat biking community here in the Wausau area is big and growing, and it's definitely something to try out," Nowaczyk mentioned.
