"It's a miracle": Barron community reflects on Jayme's return

BARRON, Wis. (WSAW) -- Dozens of signs welcoming Jayme Closs home dot the roadsides of Barron County on Friday. For a community strained from searching and waiting for 88 long days, her return is truly miraculous.

"I am really happy that she came home safe," reflects Ron Faldten, Barron's mayor. "It's what we have been praying for--that she returns safely to Barron. And it's a miracle."

For a community ready to welcome Jayme with open arms, the Barron area school district superintendent speaks for many when she says they're already thinking about the celebration.

"There's one last question that has been asked that I would like to address," superintendent Diane Tremblay said Friday morning. "Will our district hold a celebration or ceremony in the community of any sort? All I can say at this time is: you better believe it."

Barron parents were excited to share the news of Jayme's return with their children when they woke up Friday morning.

"For a 13-year-old girl to get enough courage to get up and run and find help to come home? We have all been waiting for her."

After waiting for almost three months, the Barron community is more than ready to help Jayme on her road to recover--every step of the way.

Jayme went missing on October 15 after a mysterious 911 call led police to find Jayme's parents shot dead in their home in Barron. 88 days later after thousands of tips and two massive searches but few leads, a woman walking her dog Thursday evening spotted the girl walking down a road in Gordon. Jayme ran up to her, screaming that she had escaped from a man who had killed her parents. Police arrested a suspect less than half an hour after making contact with Jayme, who was able to give them a description of his car.

21-year-old Jake Thomas Patterson is now in custody facing charges of two first-degree intentional homicide counts and one count of kidnapping. He's set to appear in court January 14.
