ROTHSCHILD, Wis. (WSAW) -- Congressman Sean Duffy hosted his fifth annual Hunger & Homelessness Summit on Wednesday in Rothschild.
The summit began at 8 a.m. Rep. Duffy was joined by First Lady Tonette Walker, Secretary of the Department of Housing and Urban Development, Dr. Ben Carson and President of the National Alliance to End Homelessness, Nan Roman.
Wisconsin business and community leaders who work on the front lines of combating rural poverty were in attendance.
Some of the audience was engaged and taking notes. Others who said they doubt any good will come out the summit. Congressman Duffy responded to those comments.
"Those who are nay-sayers on this event, I would just point out. There hasn't been a Central Wisconsin event where we talk about homelessness and hunger and bring in the secretary of the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development ever-- until I did it, " Congressman Duffy said.
During the event, Secretary Carson unveiled his new plan for what he's calling "Envision Centers". He described the concept as a place which would serve as a hub for homeless people and families in poverty to get resources, job training. and education.
He said there will be more information on this in the coming weeks and thanked the audience after a Q&A session.
"The best ideas don't come from Washington, D.C. They come from places like Rothschild Wisconsin," Dr. Carson said.
