Victim in Wausau car fire identified

WAUSAU, Wis. (WSAW) -- A man that died pulled from a burning car Monday morning near Eastbay has been identified as Eugene Hartjes, of Wausau.

Police said Hartjes, 75, suffered a medical event prior to crashing his vehicle. The car caught on fire. He died at a nearby hospital.

Two people that pulled the man from his burning vehicle were also treated for burns. In all, six people assisted in getting the man from the car.

"They did a really good job. They actually had a couple of people who had some first responder training as well. He was very fortunate to have that response by citizens. It was nice to see," Pauls said.

The vehicle fire was reported around 9:42 a.m. in a parking lot across from Eastbay.

Wausau Police Lieutenant Melinda Pauls said the vehicle was engulfed when rescue crews arrived on scene.

S. 1st Avenue near Eastbay was closed to traffic following the incident.
