UWSP MBB cools off in second half in road loss to UW-La Crosse

LA CROSSE, Wis. -- After shooting 46 percent from the field in the first half, the UW-Stevens Point men's basketball team (13-6, 5-4) was held to 36 percent shooting in the second half in a 60-52 loss at UW-La Crosse (15-5, 8-1) on Thursday. UWL swept the season series, handing UWSP the first consecutive losses to the Eagles since 1998.

Canon O'Heron (Bangor, Wis./Bangor) scored a game-high 18 points for UWSP. Drew Fredrickson (Mount Horeb, Wis./Mount Horeb) added 10 points and grabbed a season-high nine rebounds. Nate Dodge (East Troy, Wis./East Troy) and Brett Tauber (Madison, Wis./Memorial) had five points and five rebounds apiece.

O'Heron opened the scoring in the opening minute of play as the team traded buckets to a 9-9 tie at the 14:20 mark. Matt Koerner (West Bend, Wis./West) hit a three and Aaron Knez (Chippewa Falls, Wis./Chippewa Falls) made a layup, but the score was tied at 16-16 midway through the first half.

Koko Songolo (Madison, Wis./Memorial) nailed a three-pointer at 8:21 setting off a 7-0 UWSP run. O'Heron threw down a dunk and Blake Ehrke (Deerfield, Wis./Deerfield) hit a layup for a six-point advantage, 27-21. The Pointers went the final 4:40 of the half scoreless, but held a 27-23 lead at the break.

Dodge snapped the scoreless streak with a three just over two minutes into the second half. Back-to-back baskets by O'Heron tied the game at 36-36, but a 13-6 run spurred the Eagles to a lead they wouldn't relinquish.

Fredrickson buried a pair of threes down the stretch, but UWSP could not get it down to a one-possession game in the loss.

UWSP returns home on Saturday (Feb. 2) to face UW-River Falls. It is Youth Honor America and Military Appreciation Day at Quandt Fieldhouse. The first 750 fans receive the fifth set of trading cards and fans are encouraged to bring the first four sets to the game for a post-game autograph session. Tip-off is scheduled for 3:00 p.m.
