STEVENS POINT, Wis. -- No. 1-ranked UW-Stevens Point Men's Hockey (18-0-2, 3-0-0) defeated No. 3 UW-Eau Claire (16-3-2, 2-1-1), 3-1, on Friday at K.B. Willett Arena.
This highly anticipated matchup between the No. 1 and No. 3 teams in the country, saw the Pointers control most of the game.
At 17:13 of the first period, Danny Kiraly (Glendale, Ariz.) ripped a shot from the blue line to put UWSP ahead, 1-0, with Luke McElhenie (Sauk City, Wis.) getting the assist.
Just 1:28 into the second period, a TJ Roo (Champlin, Minn.) goal got waved off with play continuing for another two minutes before a whistle was called. After the refs conferred with the goal judge, the goal was confirmed good for a 2-0 Pointers' lead. Luke McElhenie (Sauk City, Wis.) picked up his second assist of the night
Austin Kelly (Toledo, Ohio) gave the Pointers a 3-0 advantage when he deked the UW-Eau Claire goaltender, Zach Dyment, to score his seventh goal of the season. Assists came from Brennen Miller (Keller, Texas) and B.J. Duffin (Red Deer, Alta.) on the goal.
The Blugolds finally got on the board at 17:30 mark of the second period with Nathan Dingmann recording the goal.
A scrappy, but scoreless third period led to a 3-1 Pointers' win to remain unbeaten on the year.
Sophomore goaltender Connor Ryckman (Minesing, Ont.) improved to 17-0-1 on the season, making 14 saves in the game. Blugolds' netminder, Zach Dyment took the loss, making 21 saves.
The Pointers travel to UW-River Falls on Saturday (Jan. 19) to continue conference play. Puck drop is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
