Stratford's Curt Schmidt wins NC7 Boys Basketball Coach of the Year

STRATFORD, Wis. (WSAW) -- The Stratford Tigers basketball team had a year to remember. Head coach Curt Schmidt led the Tigers to an undefeated regular season.

Schmidt has been named our NewsChannel 7 Boys Basketball Coach of The Year.

He helped take the Tigers to the sectional semifinals and finished the year with an outstanding 24-1 record.

This is Schmidt’s second NewsChannel 7 coach of the year.

He previously won the award in 2000 as the girls’ basketball coach at Stratford. That was Schmidt's first year coaching.

19 years later, he's still thankful for the great people that helped him snag this award.

"It was humbling," said Schmidt. "That's the first thing that comes to my mind. You know it's a culmination of having such a great group of kids and parents, and just being able to work here and the administration and the support you get. I know a coach gets recognized, but you know as well as I do, it started with my wife and lots of coaches and the coaching staff and committed players and good players, they all have a piece."

"He tries to instill us to be leaders, and he wants us to work like a family, said Stratford junior forward Vaughn Breit. "I think that really helped this year. Everyone worked really well together, and the team chemistry was the bet it's been in a really long time."
