WAUSAU, WIS. (WSAW) -- Day One is in the books of the NewsChannel 7 Men's Senior Golf Classic, and Tom Shafranski is on top of the leader board at +1.
When Tom Shafranski was asked about his 73 after completing the first round, he looked and said, "were you surprised?" Yeah, maybe a little bit, I told him with a big laugh. But hey, Tom's a great golfer. He's been working at this game for a long time and it's finally paying off. He goes into Day Two of the Senior Men's Classic with a one shot lead over the rest of the field with a 73.
"I'm just going to relax and see...there are so many good players here. It's really fun to just be with some of these players and be able to play with them," Shafranski said.
"It does help having been here. I'm going to go out and play my game. Do the best I can do and not worry about the other guys," second place Joe Mertens said, finishing round one +2 with 74.
"I've been close a lot. Tomorrow's a different day. I never know what comes to the course," Mark Asplund said, tied for third place with +3 with 75.
History shows that a one shot lead in this tournament is nothing to feel too secure about. There are six players within three shots of Shafranski's lead.
