Derek Michalski and Jill Amundson hold comfortable leads after Day 1

WAUSAU, Wis. (WSAW) -- Derek Michalski holds a three stroke lead after day one in the NewsChannel 7 Men's Golf Classic at Greenwood Hills. Michalski was -5 through 12 holes before he bogied or double bogied four of the final six holes.

"Made a couple of long puts today on the front nine and a couple more of them on the back nine, and then, kind of didn't finish as well, but struck it really well and was pretty happy overall with how I played," said Michalski.

Michalski has six players within five strokes heading into the second day.

"I think there is a little bit of pressure, but I'm still gonna stick to the same game plan and just kind of stick to how I play golf and don't really change much," said Michalski.

On the women's side, Jill Amundson's 82 on day one would be good enough to control a four stroke lead. Amundson deems herself a snowbird, so she joined the NC7 Golf Classic by fate.

"No, I was just coming to have fun. Just play golf. I thought it would be a good thing to do. Two of my friends talked me into it, and so it's kind of fun," said Amundson.

Inevitably, the ball was flying in her direction. Although, that wasn't the case on every hole.

"I knew I was playing OK, but I didn't know for sure. I figured somebody else played better. I four-putted a green for heavens sake."

Two champions will be crowned on Sunday. Two player will feel the pressure despite having a little bit of breathing room.
