Blugolds Spoil Pointers Upset Bid With Three Goals In The Third

STEVENS POINT, Wis. -- The UW-Stevens Point women's hockey team (8-11-2, 1-4-1) lost, 3-2, to No. 9-ranked UW-Eau Claire (15-4-2, 4-1-0) on Saturday at Ice Hawks Arena.

The Pointers led the Blugolds, 2-0, going into the third period before giving up three goals in a five-minute span to fall, 3-2.

After a scoreless first period, senior Lauren Smith (Antigo, Wis./Antigo) scored unassisted to put the Pointers in front at 7:58 of the second period.

Just seconds after a Pointers' penalty-kill ended, Shannon Motzko (Woodbury, Minn./Woodbury) found Alex Grubbs (Minong, Wis./Spooner) for her team-leading seventh goal of the season at the 16:40 mark of the second.

Blugolds' Hanna Zavoral cut UWSP's lead in half at 2:49 into the third period.

UWEC tied the game at 6:01 of the third period on a goal by Elizabeth Bauer. Kelly Knetter picked up the assist.

The Blugolds completed the comeback when Zavoral recorded her second goal of the game, scoring the game-winner at 7:42 into the third.

The Pointers pressed the final 13 minutes of the game, but were unable to tally the equalizer.

Senior goaltender Sydney Conley (South St. Paul, Minn./South St. Paul) took the loss, making 35 saves in the game. UWEC goalie Erin Connolly, saw seven shots on goal, making five saves.

UWSP plays UW-Eau Claire next weekend with a home-and-away series to close out the season series against the Blugolds. Game times are Friday at 7:00 p.m. at Ice Hawks Arena and 2:00 p.m. in Eau Claire.
