WAUSAU, WIS. (WSAW) -- Ben Alt leads wire to wire, day one to day two. He's your 2017 NewsChannel 7 Golf Classic champion, but it didn't come easy. He had to rally from two shots down in the final three holes before before eventually taking home the Mark Zellich Trophy.
" I made three double bogeys today and I think I had like six birdies. So it was definitely up and down but I was proud of the way I hung in there and played through adversity," Alt said.
"I hit a great shot I just misjudged the window a little bit and went over the green, and once you go over the green it kicked into the woods so that was what happened," Matt Tuman, who tied for second, said.
"You know it comes down to putting. I played really good today, didn't find trouble anywhere and just couldn't put. I put myself on the wrong side of the hole too many times," Brian Krueger, who tied for second, said.
Afterwards talking with Ben, his parents weren't even here to watch this happen. They were up north camping. Said they'll be very thrilled to learn that he's the champion, once he's able to get a hold of them.
Coming in first for the ladies was Kailey Godfrey with 160 total.
"I'm really excited. This is only my second 36 hole tournament, and to win it is a great feeling. I played well. These were some of my lowest scores, first time breaking 80 in a tournament yesterday so I'm really happy about it. Really excited. Oh yeah for sure. Definitely playing this again next year. This was fun," Godfrey said.
