2018 NewsChannel 7 All-Stars: Defense

WAUSAU, Wis. (WSAW) -- Make it 58 years of recognizing the best players in our area as voted on by the coaches of Central Wisconsin. Let's meet the 12 players that make up the defensive side of our NewsChannel 7 All-Stars.

We'll start in the trenches.

Stratford's Ben Barten is going to play with Wisconsin for a reason. The Marawood lineman of the year tallied 88 tackles, 55 of those were solo, 6 sacks, 2 forced fumbles and an interception to go along with it.

Stephen Buchanan helped lead the Loyal Greyhounds to Level 3 of the playoffs. The senior was a sack machine with 11 along with 62 tackles and one forced fumble. He also took home the Cloverwood's defensive player of the year.

The Wisconsin Valley was dominated by Jack Kelly. The senior snagged the conference defensive lineman of the year award by tallying 19 tackles with three for a loss, and 1 forced fumble.

We're going back-to-back. Logan Zschernitz takes home his second NewsChannel 7 All-Star award in a row. The Spencer/Columbus senior went to work with 71 tackles, 14 of those for loss and 4 sacks.

Let's move on to the linebackers.

Mosinee's Wyatt Beyerl was selected as a unanimous First-Team Great Northern linebacker. The senior registered 87 tackles, 47 solo, one interception and one fumble recovery.

Ty Guden helped lead Edgar to within one game of a state title. The senior was unanimous First-Team Marawood selection with 147 tackles, 22 for a loss, three forced fumbles, two recovered and one interception.

The man who does it all Iola-Scandinavia's Bryce Huettner. The CWC-Large defensive player of the year racked up 107 tackles, 70 solo, one fumble recovery, two interceptions and a state title to cap it off.

Travel north and you will see Rib Lake/Prentice's Kai Vedder tearing up the Marawood. A whopping 138 tackles, 71 of those solo, 2 sacks, 5 forced fumbles, 4 recoveries and 1 interception on his way to First-Team All-Marawood.

Let's take a look at the defensive backs.

Edgar takes home their second all-star this season with Karson Butt. The senior ball hawk corralled two interceptions, forced three fumbles, recovered one and finished with 81 tackles on his way to First-Team All-Marawood.

The VFA West Conference champs find their first all-star this season in Nolan Hertel. The Marshfield safety snagged four interceptions, two fumble recoveries with 108 tackles. The senior brought home First-Team All-VFA West honors.

Ethan Meece of Spencer/Columbus smothered opposing offenses with 10 passes defended, five interceptions and 41 tackles, two for a loss. He brings home the hardware by being First-Team All-Cloverbelt.

Last but not least, our punter is Michal Dul of Mosinee. Just a sophomore, Dul punted 21 times averaging nearly 34 yards a punt. The First-Team Great Northern punter pinned teams inside the 20 five times.
