Your Town Merrill: The story behind its huge Christmas wreath

MERRILL, Wis. (WSAW) -- It's hard to miss the 20-foot Christmas wreath that sits outside the Lincoln County courthouse in Merrill.

The wreath was made by Mitchell Metal Products, a company specializing in metal stampings and other components for a variety of industries.

During this time of the year, the company focuses on making metal wreath rings and made the large wreath for the city in 2015.

The wreath replaces decorations that went on trees surrounding the courthouse. Those trees were cut down when disease took them over.

The executive director for the Merrill Area Chamber of Commerce Debbe Kinsey said the wreath is a special part of Merrill.

"This year, they added a gigantic red bow to it-- all made out of metal," Kinsey said. "We think that's something unique to Merrill, being sort of the Evergreen capital and, certainly, the wreath form-making capital of the world, so that has great significance."

Lighting the wreath and other holiday lights does not come cheap. Kinsey said $500 is needed every season to keep the decorations glowing.
