Wausau Police gets $500 grant for K-9 program

WAUSAU, Wis. (WSAW) -- The Wausau Police Department and their furry officers have a nice donation coming their way.

The department received a $500 dollar grant Friday from Aftermath Services, which gives out money based on community voting nationwide. It's a big help for a necessary part of the force.

"We have four drug K-9s in our department, so it's a costly program to implement and to run,” Wausau Police Chief Ben Bliven said. “But they're really critical to what we do as a police department, to how we impact the drug trade in our community. Aftermath has done this grant program for a number of years now.”

“I’m just really grateful that we're kind of able to end at the top there and be able to receive some grant funding, because it helps offset some of the cost to running the K-9 program, which is very helpful and beneficial, that K-9 program is really important to our community. "

Chief Bliven says the money can be used on any number of things including food, veterinary care, and equipment.
