WAUSAU, Wis. (WSAW) -- Wisconsin Public Service is warning customers about a series of scam attempts. Since Monday afternoon, the agency says it has received about 40 reports as of Tuesday afternoon, of scam phone calls claiming to be from WPS.
The callers are threatening to disconnect service and are demanding that a payment be made. Some are using recordings of WPS messages to disguise their identity. Most calls have been in the Green Bay area, with one customer paying out hundreds of dollars to a scammer.
WPS is reminding customers that they should not provide any payment information over the phone if they cannot verify the caller, and do not conduct business in a threatening manner or require payment via prepaid credit card.
If you receive a suspicious phone call from WPS, you should hang up and call 800-450-7260 to verify the status of your WPS account.
