Shipwrecked Brew Pub likely total loss after Door County fire
A historic Door County building is likely a total loss, after a massive fire Sunday afternoon.
Fire crews first responded to Shipwrecked Brew Pub on the corner of Horseshoe Bay Road and Egg Harbor around 11 o’clock Sunday morning. Action 2 News was first on the scene where dozens of fire departments responded.
“Our housekeeper went into room number five, and found a couch on fire and the air conditioner on fire,” says Shipwrecked Brew Pub general manager, Joe Smith. “They grabbed several fire extinguishers, attempted to put it out, and it just got out of control real fast.”
Everyone was able to evacuate the building, as employees called 911.
The Egg Harbor Fire Department was first on scene, but firefighters quickly realized they would need backup. Units from nearly every emergency response team across Door County responded, with close to 20 fire trucks blocking off the area.
Just after 11 o’clock, the American Red Cross was called. They were told to bring supplies for up to 100 firefighters to put out the blaze.
“We have not been told that there’s any injuries or anybody displaced,” says Ron Maloney of the American Red Cross. “They've been putting a ton of water on it and all the smoke is coming out the top. So you know, it doesn't look too good.”
Nearby businesses chipped in with extra food and water for firefighters as they worked for nearly five hours to contain the flames and smoke.
Employees tell Action 2 News the building is likely a total loss.
“From the looks of things, it’s going to need a lot of work, if we’re even able to fix what’s there,” Smith says. “But it's looking like we may just have to start over from scratch.”
Power was cut at the Brew Pub, as well as at neighboring businesses and homes, to keep the area safe as emergency crews worked to put out the blaze. Power was restored around 5:30 Sunday evening.
