KRONEWETTER, Wis (WSAW) -- In honor of the firefighters who died during the September 11th attacks 17 years ago, the Kronewetter Fire Department held their annual ‘Run for the Fallen” event Saturday morning at Towering Pines Park.
The race kicked-off with an opening prayer and testimonies from Wisconsin locals who went to help in the days after the attack.
Participants were able to choose between a 1 mile, a 5-k or 10-k run.
Many runners were given a photo id of one of the fallen first responders who lost their life.
Organizers and participants believe the nation is 17-years stronger following the horrific terrorist attack.
"We have roughly 800 people running,” shared Chief Jason Budnik with the Kronewetter Fire Department. There are over 35 other fire departments running during the 1-mile challenge.”
Free food and drinks were donated thanks to the Salvation Army. Everything fundraised will go to the National Fallen Firefighters Foundation to support families who lost a loved one during active duty.
