UPDATE: $400K in damage reported at Merrill area farm

Investigators said a machine shop is likely a total loss after a fire Wednesday afternoon 12 miles south of of Merrill in the Town of Maine. The Marathon County Sheriff's Department estimates about $400,000 in damage.

Fire departments from several jurisdictions including Hamburg, Merrill and Wausau were called to Van Der Geest Farms on County Highway A around 3:15 p.m. for an engulfed structure fire. Crews said when they arrived on scene the sky was pitch black due to heavy smoke. According to dispatch reports there was concern as a 500-gallon diesel fuel tank was nearby.

NewsChannel 7's Rebecca Cardenas reported a 1/2 mile stretch of County Highway A in both directions was closed as crew battled the fire.

Investigators said no one was inside at the time of the fire. The cause remains under investigation.
