Health Dept: No sign of Zika in Wis., but preventing West Nile is just as important
Most of us are keeping a close eye on the Zika virus, and that includes the Marathon County Health Department.
And while it's unlikely mosquitoes carrying Zika will end up in the northwoods, Wisconsin travelers must take precautions if heading to affected countries or even the southern portion of the U.S.
Simple advice like wearing longsleeves and pants, and using an environmental protection agency approved repellent on your skin and clothing.
"Stay at facility that has screens on the windows. You could use a mosquito net,” advised Becky Mroczenski of the Marathon County Health Dept.
She reminds the public Zika carrying mosquitoes have not been found in Wisconsin. But the mosquitoes in the badger state can transmit the West Nile Virus. She says ways to avoid getting bit are similar.
