APPLETON, Wis. (WLUK/WSAW) -- Dozens of people gathered at Core Church in Appleton on Thursday evening for a prayer vigil remembering fallen firefighter Mitchell Lundgaard.

The 14-year veteran of Appleton Fire Department leaves behind a wife and three young children.

"This man was a father and a husband," a vigil attendee said. "It's huge to not only a firefighter doing his job--a real person."

The pastor leading the vigil held several minutes of music and silence.

"Have some time with thoughts and prayers that we hope turn into action and visible love," he said. "Let's give ourselves a little bit of space to process and think about God's promises and turn to Him in our time of need."

Lundgaard died after he was shot at the Appleton bus station yesterday. Investigators say they were called there to help a 47-year-old man who was having a medical emergency. The Wausau-area man starting shooting as the incident escalated. Two other people were injured, including an Appleton police officer.
