A 29-year-old woman accused of causing a crash that killed a motorcyclist last summer has pleaded no contest to reduced charges.

Jessica Hendricks appeared in Wood County Circuit Court Monday for a plea hearing. Initially, Hendricks was charged with second degree reckless homicide but agreed to plead no contest to homicide by negligent operation of a vehicle. Hendricks was found guilty as result and will avoid a jury trial.

Investigators said Scott Carlson was on a motorcycle near the intersection State Highway 173 near Kimball Ave. in the Town of Port Edwards when a vehicle headed west on Highway 173 hit the rear of the bike just before around 10 p.m. July 25. Carlson was pronounced dead at the scene.

According to court documents, Hendricks admitted to reading a text message at the time of the crash.

A sentencing date has not yet been set.
