Personal information for 258K people accessed in Adams County data breach
User names, passwords and other personal information for 258,120 people was illegally accessed by an employee and now a criminal investigation is underway.
According to Adams County Manager Casey Bradley questionable activity on the Adams County computer system and network was discovered in late June and a data breach was confirmed.
At the time of the breach personal identification information, personal health information and tax intercept information was present on the county's computer system for the veteran's service office, county employees, solid waste department, health and human services department, child support, and the sheriff's office.
Bradley says there is evidence that unauthorized access was used to gain rights, usernames and passwords by manipulating software programs on the county's network.
A criminal investigation is underway and at least one suspect has been identified by law enforcement.
According to Bradley the suspects no longer has access to the county's network and the county has taken further steps to limit network access to a few individuals.
