UPDATE: Missing boater found dead in Vilas Co. lake identified

PHELPS, Wis. (WSAW) --- The Vilas County Sheriff's Office has identified a missing boater who was found dead Saturday morning in the Lac Vieux Desert Lake in Phelps. He is John Zeibert, 70, from Phelps.

On Friday at about 11:08 p.m., officials responded to a report of a missing elderly male that had not returned from boating on the lake. Zeibert was last seen around 7:30 p.m.

When deputies arrived, they found his boat floating in the water unoccupied.

The Vilas County Sheriff's Office, Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources, Phelps Fire Department and Phelps Ambulance all responded to a search of the area.

At about 8:00 a.m. Saturday, Zeibert was found in the water.

The cause of the drowning remains under investigation.

The man was not wearing a life jacket at the time. The Vilas County Sheriff's Office is reminding people to wear life jackets while enjoying water-related activities.
