Merrill Boys' basketball coach resigns amid investigation

MERRILL, Wis. (WSAW) -- Merrill Superintendent Wally Leipart stated in a news release Wednesday boys' varsity basketball coach Kurt Soderberg on leave since Feb. 10 has resigned.

Soderberg is accused of getting into an inappropriate verbal dispute with a parent following a basketball game on Feb. 9.

Adam Smith, the Merrill High School Boys' JV coach has also been place on paid, non-disciplinary leave.

Soderberg also remains on leave as associate principal.

Paid leave is standard protocol.

In a news release Feb. 22 the district stated, "We have no concern of student safety in the initiation of this investigation. We want to assure our athletes, students, parents and community that we have total confident in the other coaches on staff to prepare our student athletes at this time."
