MADISON, Wis. (WSAW) -- A moment that will never be forgotten. The Dons inbounded the ball to Ethan Meece. Then in a blink of an eye, the rock made its way to Tom Nystrom. The junior fired. As the ball was rotating through the air, the buzzer sounded, and then all that could be heard was cheers. Nystrom delivered. His only made basket of the game gave the Dons a 69-66 win over Bangor.
"I really don't remember what was going through my mind," said Nystrom. "I was just so happy after it. I just didn't even realize that it did go in for a little bit. I'm glad it did."
Columbus Catholic will be heading to its first ever WIAA State Boys Basketball Title Game.
The Dons seemed to have it in hand with less than 10 minuets left in the game. Columbus Catholic held a 13 point lead, but Bangor's full-court trap led to a comeback. Nystrom and the Dons remained cool until the end to win the game.
Columbus Catholic was led by Jarred Mandel who tallied 22 points while shooting 4-9 from deep and grabbing 10 boards.
Bryce Fuerlinger also put on a show. The senior snagged 25 rebounds, which would set the Division 5 all-time record and was just one shy of the all-time State Tournament record. He also dropped 15 points while shooting 53 percent.
