Create Portage County seeks technology grant to grow businesses, arts, community causes

STEVENS POINT, Wis. (WSAW) -- Create Portage County is one of the few places that has a large scale 3D printer that anyone can use. It's just part of the many things they offer residents in Portage County and beyond. "We launch new businesses, we support art projects and we do a lot of community impact work as well. They are shared working spaces with shared technology that people can use for creative projects," explained Greg Wright of Create Portage County.

To get more technology like this they are applying for a Community Thrives grant. In order to be in the running for the grant they have to show that the community wants it too. "They want to see as many people contribute as possible so what we are encouraging people to do is contribute $10," said Wright.

They have 19 days to raise at least $3,000 but their goal is $15,000. Once they reach the $3,000 mark they will be eligible for the $100,000 grant for new technology.

Some of the things they are looking at using the money for is to buy printing presses, laser cutters, a recording studio, robotics kit and any other equipment that might help people in the area.

"We're going to use all the funds we raise either through this grant or grant prizes we get to purchase new technology for the idea center," Wright said.

It's all in an effort to develop a community where everyone can be creative. "Anybody in central Wisconsin can use Create Portage County. We have actually had people come down from Minocqua to use our space," said Wright.
