'Oh dang;' Residents react after SUV crashes into Wausau home
On Monday afternoon, a sedan collided with a SUV causing the driver of the SUV to lose control and crash into a house on Wausau’s north side.
The Wausau Police Department and Wausau Fire Department were dispatched to the house near the intersection of 6th and McClellan Streets shortly after 1 p.m. for reports of an accident.
Once on scene, first responders saw the SUV stuck underneath the front porch of the home. The driver of the SUV, an adult woman, was trapped inside and had to be rescued by the Wausau Fire Department. There were multiple people inside the sedan. No one was taken to the hospital.
Residents of the home were inside at the time of the crash. They tell NewsChannel 7 they were in shock that this could happen in their neighborhood.
"I was just sitting up in my room, relaxing and then I heard a loud crash. It sounded like thunder,” explained Dave Lerand, who was on the second floor in the home at the time of the crash. “I looked out the window and saw the SUV under the porch and my first initial response was ‘oh dang’”.
The Wausau Fire Department had to use multiple high-lift jacks to keep the impacted part of the home from collapsing. Part of 6th Street was closed for several hours and traffic was rerouted to nearby streets. The Wausau Fire Department said the SUV was a few feet away from hitting a gas meter which could have started a fire.
Police are still investigating what led to the crash but alcohol and drugs are not believed to be a factor.
