One in eight women will be diagnosed with breast cancer in her lifetime. It's the reason why WSAW-TV's Buddy Check 7 is so important.

NewsChannel 7 will host its fourth annual Buddy Check 7 Phone Bank on Thursday, Oct. 18. It will run 4 p.m. - 7 p.m. Coverage will take place during our newscasts along with an extended half hour of coverage from 6:30-7 p.m.

A panel of experts from Marshfield Clinic will be on hand to listen to your breast health concerns and answer questions you may have about breast cancer, self-exams and treatments. They will also share resources you can turn to for more personalized medical advice and support. All information is confidential and free.

You can call the phone bank directly at 715-203-8285.

New this year, Marshfield Clinic's mobile mammography unit will be at our NewsChannel 7 studios. While it's here, you're able to get a mammography between 10 a.m. and 5:30 p.m. on Oct. 18. To do that, you need to set up an appointment with Marshfield Clinic Mobile Services. The numbers to call are 715-389-3822 or 715-221-6086. It will be very difficult to accommodate walk-in patients.

Before you set up an appointment, be sure to check with your insurance provider to make sure it's covered. If you have questions about financial assistance, call Marshfield Clinic's Patient Assistance Center at 1-800-782-8581 ext. 9-4475. They have access to the Wisconsin Well Woman Program, that may cover the cost of a mammogram for patients who qualify.

During the appointment, a licensed and certified female technician will conduct a medical history and then do the 2-D exam. The images will be sent electronically to radiologists specifically trained in breast imaging for analysis. Results will be mailed to you within 30 days. If anything unusual is detected, you will be called ASAP.

Over the years, the mobile mammography units have detected hundreds of cases of breast cancer and helped get patients the treatment they need.

Buddy Check 7 is an initiative aimed to remind you and a buddy to be proactive and perform a self-breast exam on the seventh of every month. It is sponsored by WSAW-TV and Marshfield Clinic. Let us help you win the fight against breast cancer.
