According to the American Cancer Society, there are an estimated 15.5 million cancer survivors in the United States, a huge increase from only three million survivors in 1971. An event this weekend in Rhinelander is celebrating that and encouraging positive thinking.

Sunrise 7 spoke with Nancy Lilles, a stage III breast cancer survivor, and Kim Hetland, Director of Cancer Services at the James Beck Cancer Center at Ministry St. Mary's Hospital in Rhinelander. Lilles will be the guest speaker at the center's Ninth Annual Celebration of Life – Embrace the Song of Life. She will share her story of survival. She said despite challenges cancer presents, or even when cancer cannot be stopped, those facing the disease can still choose to live active and productive lives. She emphasized that is how patients can beat cancer despite their diagnosis.

The event takes place Thursday, August 18, from 5:30 - 7:30 p.m. on the grounds of Ministry Saint Mary’s Hospital, located at 2251 North Shore Drive in Rhinelander. There will also be a butterfly release and open house following the ceremony.
