KAUKAUNA, Wis. (WBAY) - The winning ticket for that massive $1.2 billion Mega Millions jackpot from Friday’s drawing was sold in Illinois, but Wisconsin has a new millionaire courtesy of that same lottery drawing.
Someone purchased a $1 million Mega Millions ticket Friday, July 29, at Lighthouse Corner Mobil, 1005 Crooks Ave. The Kaukauna million dollar prize winner matched all five numbers but not the Mega Ball: 13, 36, 45, 57, 67.
The store’s owner told Action 2 News the lottery reached out to them on Saturday to let them know a million-dollar ticket was sold there.
”We were excited a little bit, so yeah, it’s kind of a fame for the store too, you know,” owner Jessie Singh said.
Lottery officials asked the store to pull video from its security camera system from around the time the winning ticket was sold on Friday. Singh said he immediately recognized a familiar face in the video and hoped that man was the winner. “He’s a regular customer. He buys everything -- drinks, whatever -- but he plays lottery a lot too.”
Then Monday, the man returned to the store to share their exciting news.
Not only is the winner a regular Lighthouse Corner customer, he also lives here in Kaukauna.
”It is a big excitement. Especially it’s a pleasure to find out somebody from Kaukauna, locally won that. It makes a big difference,” Singh said.
The Mobil station is known as Lighthouse Corner, but you could probably start calling it Prosperity Place. Back in 2016, it sold a $3.6 million Megabucks ticket to a Kaukauna resident and an $87,000 Badger 5 winner.
“$5,000, $10,000, those have been sold over here too,” Singh pointed out.
Although Kaukauna’s newest millionaire visited with the store’s owner, he still needs to turn in his winning ticket to state lottery officials to collect the million-dollar check.
Winning tickets of $200,000 or more must be claimed in person at the Madison Lottery Office. The winner has 180 days after the draw date to claim the prize. Singh thinks the winner will be making the trip to Madison in the next couple of days.
