Duplex fire kills 1 in Stevens Point
STEVENS POINT, Wis. (WSAW) - The Stevens Point Police Department is investigating the death of a woman after a fire Thursday morning.
Around 7 a.m., crews responded to a fire at a duplex on the 800 block of Bliss Avenue. First responders learned a woman was inside one unit of the duplex. She was brought to an area hospital for injuries sustained during the fire and later pronounced dead.
“While in route, they upgraded the alarm from a metro response to a box alarm through MABAS 110 division here in Portage County to get us additional resources knowing that we had a working structure fire,” said Fire Chief Jb Moody of the Stevens Point Fire Department.
Two Stevens Point firefighter/paramedics and two Stevens Point police officers were seen at the hospital for injuries and have been released.
The fire was contained to one apartment. Stevens Point Fire Chief said crews arrived on the scene within minutes and other fire was quickly extinguished. Multiple fire departments were called for assistance including Plover and the town of Hull.
“The fire was out in a matter of minutes. The call came in at 7:12. We had apparatuses on scene within 4 to 6 minutes and then proceeded to attempt to get the victims out of the home and suppress the fire at the same time,” said Moody.
The cause of the fire has not yet been determined. The woman’s name has not yet been released.
